The spirit of Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel, a timeless symbol of elegance, will hover over the megacity of Shanghai this summer.
From July 12 to November 24, the Power Station of Art will host “Gabrielle Chanel. Fashion Manifesto”, a retrospective exhibition celebrating the life and work of the founder of the iconic Parisian fashion house.
This exhibition, which was first launched at the Palais Galliera in Paris in 2020, has since ventured well beyond French borders, captivating audiences in Melbourne, Tokyo, and London.
Now, it is set to make a stop in China, a country Chanel never visited but which strongly influenced her art through items such as the Coromandel screens that adorned her Rue Cambon apartment.

Chanel’s “Fashion Manifesto” is a window into the designer’s evolving style, showcasing her revolutionary stylistic codes that continue to inspire contemporary fashion.
Collection pieces inherited from the brand, international museums, and private collections will be on display, promising an immersion into Chanel’s universe.
The director of the Palais Galliera, in collaboration with the Power Station of Art, has overseen the organization of this Shanghai edition.
While specifics of this edition are still under wraps, the focus may be on Chanel’s connections with Chinese culture.
The London edition of the exhibition added pieces highlighting the designer’s relations with the United Kingdom.
A similar approach that showcases Chanel’s appreciation for Asian arts can be expected.
The Power Station of Art, the first state-run contemporary art museum in mainland China, is no stranger to Chanel.
Indeed, since the creation of the “Next Cultural Producer” in partnership with the Chanel Culture Fund, the museum has already hosted exhibitions highlighting contemporary Chinese craftsmanship and architecture.
Chanel admirers and art enthusiasts are invited to dive into this exploration of fashion as a form of art and culture.
As the exhibition pays tribute to fashion history, it also weaves the threads of a dialogue between cultures and eras, demonstrating that Chanel’s legacy is as dynamic and relevant today as it was last century.
For fashion aficionados and cultural curious, the exhibition “Gabrielle Chanel. Fashion Manifesto” is a not-to-miss event, an opportunity to intimately connect with the history of a woman who changed the face of haute couture.
