Is Apple Turning to Eco-Friendly Leather? End of Partnership with Hermès in Sight

Paris, 10 September 2023

In the realm of technology, rumors often reign supreme, and Apple is no exception to the rule.

For several days, there’s been buzz that the famous California-based company might make a major change in the design of its accessories.

The big question: Is Apple ditching leather for more eco-friendly alternatives?

Goodbye, Hermès?

Firstly, it seems that Apple has ended its iconic partnership with the French luxury leather goods maker, Hermès.

Since 2015, the two giants have teamed up to offer premium leather Apple Watch bands. But recently, a visit to the online Apple Store shows that all Hermès products are marked as “Currently Unavailable.”

While this could be a harbinger of a new launch, it’s surprising to note that even accessories for AirTags, which are not expected to have an imminent update, are also sold out.

Apple’s Post-Leather Era

The rumors don’t stop there.

Mark Gurman, a well-known source in the world of Apple leaks, suggests that the Cupertino company might completely move away from leather.

In its place, new materials, not of animal origin but equally luxurious, could be used for the iPhone 15 cases.

The potential name for this range: FineWoven.

This initiative would be in line with Apple’s growing commitment to sustainability.

A Telling Promotion

Moreover, observers have noticed an interesting trend: Apple is currently offering significant discounts, up to 90%, to its employees for Hermès leather bands. Historically, such internal promotions have often preceded the discontinuation of certain products, as was the case with the HomePod in 2021.

Is Apple’s Future Green?

Rumors also indicate that Apple’s future accessories might favor low carbon footprint materials.

This would be consistent with Apple’s strategy to be more environmentally friendly.

Since the release of its leather cases in 2013 for the iPhone 5S, Apple has always been innovative.

Will 2023 be the year Apple definitively turns away from animal leather in favor of more ecological solutions?

For now, nothing is confirmed.

But one thing is for sure: if Apple decides to make this change, it could redefine the standards of the industry for luxury eco-friendly accessories.

Stay tuned for the latest updates on this exciting development.
